Centuries after humanity retreated below ground to escape the Beast Men who pilot mecha called "men," quiet, resigned Simon works as a driller, expanding the cavern that houses his subterranean village. One day, he finds a glowing drill bit that activates a gigantic humanoid robot. At the urging of his flamboyant chum Kamina, Simon fires up the mecha and the two misfits head for the forgotten surface of the Earth. Traveling through a vast desert, Simon and Kamina beat enemy men into scrap metal and pick up various allies, including buxom crack Yoko. As Simon (pronounced the Japanese way, See-mon) Yuri Lowenthal sounds more resigned, more boyish, and more nasal than Tetsuya Kakihara. Katsuyuki Konishi played Kamina like Toshiro Mifune leading a charge in Gekigangar III; Kyle ert lacks some of Konishi's over-the- top panache, but he keeps the character both likable and wacky. Michelle Ruff's Yoko is less squeaky and childish than Marina Inoue's. In English or in Japanese, Gurren Lagann offers a freewheeling insanity that rivals Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu and School Rumble.
